Hi Barry,

What is the noise level of a Prospector in the cockpit? Is this much
different from the Surveyor? Is ear protection recommended?

Thank you,
Chris

It varies considerably on location of the person in the cockpit, as the cockpit
in the Surveyor-like Fan tastic is 8 feet long, but probably a good number for
a Surveyor is 90dB(A) (re:.002microbar) at full throttle, maybe 80 at cruise,
and I do not wear hearing protection, except on a long trip, a day or so.

Some people might wear hearing protection, and I can converse with others in
the cockpit in somewhat elevated voice. The engine is the dominant noise
source, with broad band from the lift fan and noise from the propeller
recognizable from their signature, if you know what to listen for, but perhaps
10 dB(A) below the engine, as a wild guess. (I need narrow band data to
actually measure prop and fan noise, as the engine noise, crankcase radiated,
masks other noises.) In a Sevtec Prospector noise levels are considerably
lower, and in one of my videos, I am even taking a cell phone call while
underway in a Sevtec Explorer, which is very similar to the Prospector. Fan
howl is the dominant noise in the rear of the cockpit, (could be easily fixed
with a special built fan) and in one Prospector, where one could sit in front
of the control console, the self noise of the vehicle generated wind was the
dominant noise.

Noise levels cannot be judged from the Sevtec videos, unless there is noise in
the background for comparison, as the video camera determines level as much as
the viewer controls. You may hear birds chirping in the background, in a few
scenes, and an light plane overflight, if you listen for them.
